An unregistered environmental or safety observation is a lost learning opportunity for others

An unregistered environmental or safety observation is a lost learning opportunity for others.

If you would have to remember only one sentence regarding environmental and safety I think the title of this article is the best motto.

One of the parallels I like to make between project management and environmental and safety in general is that both of them work ONLY if people are committed and see the benefits of registering and collecting data.

Registering observations is the beginning of a simple process. Good and relevant observations will generate data that can help identify trends to make a positive impact in your organisation.

We all have different points of view on different issues. Some might consider an issue to be small while others would consider the same issue a big one even though there already exists a definition about it in your organisation. Only by having all people involved in data collection can a company find its cultural level and differences around what truly are small and big issues. You could also see if your observations KPI is helping to create value or if people just do it to be green.

There is a thin line between the level where people see that your EHS level makes sense or that you are overdoing it.

Since EHS is not a direct way to make money in most of the companies, you should find the appropriate measures that will support your organisation to ensure that everyone is safe and sound and able to work towards achieving your company’s goal.
